Research from Data Riskesdas from 2018, showed that in Indonesia alone, there are about 11 Million other Marios’. With the amount of stigma and doubt surrounding the topic, there might be millions more uncounted. There might even be a Mario in your life.

Concept

Mario means ‘strong’ and he represents the people who are affected by mental illnesses.

With monochromatic and rough-doodle art style used in this video, ‘Mario’ aims to leave a mark on the viewers about how daunting and real mental health is - and how people should never underestimate it.

Storyboarding

When the story begins, the animation will be played monochromatically - portraying the dark and dreary phase. A mixture of hand-drawn GIFs and smooth animation made in After Effects were used interchangeably to create a variety of scenes. As it progresses, the animation will gain its saturation - indicating that Mario had received support and is healing slowly.

Execution

The visual assets were made digitally in Photoshop and animated in After Effects. The panels made will then be compiled and composed in Premiere Pro, along with the sound effects and background music.

Reflection

Key Takeaways

This was my 2nd time tackling an informative video with a lot of animation in it, and I think I am pretty proud of how it turned out!

Comparing this project with my previous one that you could find here, I tried my best to apply the lessons I've learned back then, which was concept ⏤ the importance of a storyboard. Within the period of 6 days, I allocated 2 days for devising the concept which included references, styles, and storyboard then proceed on presenting them to my teammates for feedbacks and inputs (the part which I lack on my 1st project!)

By having a proper deck and storyboard, I could deliver my thoughts effectively to others. In addition, it eases visualization of the project which made other people understand the output better and gave inputs regarding it. However, that's not all! After finalizing the concept, next comes illustrating the assets. Honestly, I completely overlooked this part. I thought I could finish in 2 days but ⏤ I was wrong.

My initial workflow plan was:

concept → creating the assets → animating → compositing

But, it didn't work out. So, I decided to apply the workflow above in each individual scene, I started with illustrating it and directly jump into animating. This actually provided me the freedom to improvise and enhance the scenes; such as adding transition or SFX. However, I do think this works well individually, but not in collaborative work though!
